Shimano chain ring bolts

I have just removed the standard rings from my new SLX crankset. Is it normal that Shimano overtighten all the chain ring bolts to the point where I actually snapped a T27 torx bit?

Dunno, but pretty sure you should have used T30, which might have helped a bit.0

Really? That's what mine take; Maybe they changed the spec recently?0

Yes they do tighten them a lot, the ones on my Sram cranks were almost as tight. E13 cranks were much easierYT Wicked 160 ltd

I used a hammer on the torx to "crack" the bolt and get it started... I think they use a very good threadlock!0

Also found this on my xt crankset, I dont understand what was wrong with hex key bolts anyway!coiler - http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/1463278/

Odd about '14 slx using t27. My XTR cranks used a t30 but yes, it was firmly threadlocked in place.Community police have been on the look out for a vandal by the name of \'The Elusive Lout\'. Any information you could give would be gratefully received.0

Torx bolts are less likely to round out, well unless you try to use a hex to undo them. I had a rather miffed chap complain that he had rounded out all four bolts on his chainset. It was only when he said he had been using a 5mm that I realised what the problem was. Why he didn't stop after one or even two was a mystery to me.0
