Upgrading my forks...any advice?

Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading the shocks on my hardtail in time for the spring. I am currently running with SR Suntours XCT-MLO 29, they are coil sprung and came standard on my bike, also my steerer is 1.1/8" not tapered. I know there are pros and cons with both coil and air folks (maintenance, tuning etc.), but I feel in need of more option in tuning my forks. I weigh just over 15st and over 6ft tall. Is there much benefit from getting dual air or would solo do the job? I'm mainly riding trail runs and jumping in pits. I keep bottoming my current shocks out at 100mm this my be because of my weight :?

I've seen a couple of shocks I like, and are at a good price. One being the new rockshox Reba RL and the other Manitou Tower Pro. Has anyone had any experience on either and be able to give me some advice? Or should I spend a bit more and think more along the lines for Fox floats or DT Swiss?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

My choice would be Rebas. Excellent forks. Easily serviced.

Do upgrades of that nature need new front wheels due to the axles?

They will do if your axle and fork are not compatible but I think the Reba's come in QR and bolt trough flavour so he should be ok.

  • Yeah they are ok, no need for new front. I'll be using drop out forks.

I upgraded my dart 3's to the Reba RL's, you can tell the difference, they are a lot better. Got mine from Merlin as they were cheapest at the time (last March).
