Flat bar shifters

Hello to this forum from a newbie. Following vast amounts of research on the multitudes of well-meaning but confusingly conflicting and outdated advice sites on the net, i've joined the ranks of Bikeradar to take advantage of your fount of knowledge, as well as the excellent cycling content held within.
After trawling through the search results provided, I am still not able to say for definite whether the correct 10 speed flatbar shifters to fit a converted ultegra spec compact roadie, should be Shimano sl-r770's or not, as they seem to be out of stock or not available from the main uk stockists. Would Shimano be replacing this device with a new product or is it being phased out because of lack of demand? Advice on alternatives would be much appreciated

I had a set of R-770's on my dear stolen Bad Boy, and they were lovely, and worked perfectly with standard 105 5700 derailleurs, although the matching front derailleur does make for easier front shifting. They have since been discontinued. The replacement is the r780, which I can only find at http://www.bike24.com/p227310.html . There's a Tiagra Flatbar set that will probably work for about half the price as well.0

SLR-770s will work with any 9/10 road rear mech
but the front - officially - needs to be matched with the FD-R770 front mech.
You can get it to work with a standard road double front mech but you need to alter the cable routing.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
