Hi guys just looking for a bit of advice.....im looking to spend around 500 on a new hardtail MTB which will be used for both trails and cross country. Ive been looking at a Cube, Ghost and Canyon amongst others, is there any stand out bikes and any i should avoid? Ps is the Vitus Zircon II decent? Picking one up heavily reduced for £580 on chain reaction cycles.

Just to further confuse the issue, with a bit of digging you can have a well specced Voodoo Bizango from halfords for £540 or so.

That's what I've chosen, just need to pull out finger and get it ordered! :)

    Do some research into the:

    Calibre 2.2
    Calibre 5.0
    Carrera Vulcan
    Rockrider 8.1
    Voodoo Bizango

The most commonly recommended bikes for your price range, ranging from £350-£550 in order of price ascending.

Calibre 2.2 is a brilliant bike for starting out with, Rockrider 8.1 has an excellent spec for the money - hard to beat infact - and is very well reviewed. The Bizango is a 29er - up to you as to whether or not you like those, but also comes equipped with a slightly worse fork (arguably the most important component at this price).

Brakes on the rockrider 8.1 are now listed as Tektro Auriga Comp 160 mm hydraulic disc brakes
