Crankset advice

So I have a bike with a 2x10 x5 crankset. It is problematic due to its incompatibilities (and the price of chainrings) so I was tempted to get another crankset (Probably a case of student loan > sense, but price wise it doesn't work out that differently)

I was tempted to get the 9spd SLX double, sell the bash and the rings and use that as a 1x10 crankset that I could convert to 2x10 with minimal faf if needed.

Is there any problems with using a "9spd" crankset with a 10spd setup? I am assuming 9spd chainrings also work with 10spd?

Am I missing anything/are there some better crankset options?

Any chainrings with the same BDC will work, although some might need a little filing. So if you want a single, just buy a ring.

Whilst true, IIRC even the X5 2x cranks use the silly 120mm BCD so ring options are limited and expensive. Most 9 speed rings work fine on 10 speed setups so the Slx rings should work. For single rings look at Works components and RaceFace Narrow/wide rings :)

    Awesome. Cheers.
  • On my current bike I use an sox double and bash , m665 I think (?). Works fine when I converted to 10 speed however I have seen a reduction in chainring life which I attribute to the chain riding slightly higher up the teeth due to the smaller inner diameter of the links. This could be down to a multitude of other negligible factors but I'm sure it's this as I haven't changed where or how often I ride.
Not a massive issue, slx chain rings are ten a penny and affordable as a student (think I payed 11quid last time, thank you student finance).

I run an m665 slx double and bash and is perfect for my riding. Doesn't look fancy, no bling annodised bash etc but does it's job well and I aren't scared of knocking it like.

SLX is a nice chainset by any standards. Mind you I have a SRAM X9 and like that too. Have a look at Merlin Cylces, Ribble and CRC - they often seem to be the cheapest.
