Hello,

I have a bike with a 10 speed shimano 105 (5700) groupset.

If I replace the chainset with an 11 speed one, will I need also to replace the chain with an 11 speed one or will a 10 speed one be narrow enough?

If so, then does anyone have experience of using an 11 speed chain with 10 speed dérailleurs and cassette?

The chainset I'm thinking of will be one of:
Ultegra 6800
Sram Force 22
Dura Ace 9000
Sram red 22
Red bikes are the fastest.

  • Think you should be Ok with a 10s chain. AFAIK the only difference between 10s/11s chain is the outer width. Inner width should be the same.
  • Third time for this thread this week?

AFAIK the actual teeth are identical 10 to 11 so the same chain is fine.

AFAIK the actual teeth are identical 10 to 11 so the same chain is fine.

The internal size is the same, but the overall width is different. I was wondering if there was a corresponding difference in spacing between rings on the chainset.

From what I gather here and elsewhere, it should be fine.

So... 6800 chainsets are £128 on Ribble at the moment...
    Red bikes are the fastest.
  • I guessing that is it fine the other way round then? I have a 10sp dura ace srm but am thinking of getting 9000 everything else for my new frame but if it would mean getting a new srm it wouldn't be worth the extra gear..
