Power links for 7 & 8 spd

I've been servicing the kids bikes after some very muddy rides lately. Decided to fit Powerlinks to both for ease in the future.
Now I thought 7 & 8 spd chains were the same. Indeed, when I asked for Powerlinks in the local shop, I got 3 (1 spare) KMC links which were all the same
The 7 spd bike has a KMC chain. Only markings on it are 'narrow' and a big Z in the middle of the links. Powerlink fits fine on this.
The 8 spd chain is a Shimano HG50 - again labelled 'narrow'. The Powerlinks will absolutely not fit this chain (I tried 2 of them) - seems the Powerlinks is too narrow
Any ideas? As I said I thought 7 & 8 spd chains were the same. Even if not, surely the 8 spd chain would be narrower, not wider?

silver links?
should fit fine. but yes there is some difference in overall chain thickness from the different makes."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
