Want to buy or Build a Street Trial bike to ride day to day

Complete newb at this sorry, so these may well be really dumb questions.
I want to build a street trial bike that I can peddle around my neighbourhood on with my son (He a has a BMX), I currently have a 29er MTB hardtail which I use solely for MTB and a Spec Hardrock Pro as a muck around bike.
Im thinking either convert the Hardrock or sell that and build something up. I would like to retain some gearing, maybe just rears. Surely Im not the only person who has wanted to build something up like this. I'm 6ft so a stock size is fine.
