MTB tires upgrade?

Hello people,
I have a 29' Cube Acid 2013 ( http://tinyurl.com/mbb8ywn ),
Which I'm largely happy with - I do think of upgrading the stock tires perhaps for a Maxxis(?)
My question is which tires but also what's the maximum width I could fit? My tires are 2.25, would a 2.4 tire fit?
Any recommendation on a good all round tire for the UK (so mostly wet/damp conditions, forests/fire roads etc) would be great, I see people having two different tires for front and rear?
