Good choices for single front chainrings?

Looking to change my commuter to 1x10 instead of a double, as the 36 chainring is a little too small, and the 50 is just never going to get used in any meaningful way.

Any good crank + chainring options that aren't remarkably expensive?

  • I opted for the Surly 48t chainring, but I'm running an 8 speed chain/cassette - the 10 speed may be a tight fit.

I put a hope 40t(Halfords £15) on mine with a 11-34(£20 ish) at the rear with an Alivio crank (£17 off Ebay) and a Deore 10pd shifter, top speed is still good for commuting, didn't feel the need to be pushing a big ring.

I use a Stronglight track crankset on mine with a lightweight Eubiso BB.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    What chainring(s) are you using?

Thanks WindyG, that sounds pretty workable for cost. Keep forgetting Halfords as a supplier.

The chainrings are permanently attached on the stronglight track crankset...... but at £26 for the whole setup (steel ring) it's cost effective. It is designed to be used as single speed, but works just fine on my 1x9.

Nothing special, the commute is pretty flat and I can drop down the ratios and get off the line comfortably.

No issues with the teeth size with a 9 speed chain then? The Driveline track setup I bought came with a single chainring, but it was a 1/8 size not 3/32 and wouldn't allow an 8 speed chain.

No, it's for a conventional width chain, so no issues at all.
