Hi All

Thinking of getting some Conti Black Chilli tyres, I was just wondering as they are softer/gripper how long do they tend to last?

I have ridden off road motorbikes for years and when just ply/fun riding I have tended to have a good front tyre and a ok one on the rear, you want the front to go where you want and if the back slides a little, no problem/can be fun :D

So would this work with a MTB run a Chilli on the front and a ordinary one on the back, or visa versa, or is it better to go with a pair.

If you are buying Conti tyres, black chilli are the only ones to buy. Normal are crap I am told. I run a range of black chilli tread patterns all in the race sport guise, ie light weight folding but not the super light supersonic ones. Ride mostly xc race and no super sharp rocks where I am but a lot of little flint stones. I have few puncture issues. Tread wear seems fine. I haven't replaced a set yet in two years or serious riding, but I do swap them out a little. I tend to run x king front and race king rear in dry conditions, x king back mountain king front in medium wet and mountain king front and rear in winter and mud.

For what it is worth, the bike I got (canyon hard tail) came with schwable pace star compound evolution tires. Racing Ralph front and rocket Ron back. Got punctures every ride until I put the Contis on and none since then. Maybe coincidence, us who knows.

I love the Contis. Cheap (from ze Germans), grippy, roll well, last well and few punctures for me. What is not to like?

    Thanks for the reply.

What have you been told about the normal ones to make them crap?

How many miles would you of thought you have done if you haven't replaced a set in two years?

I find it all a little confusing with all the different models and types as I have only been at it for just over a month, rode a lot of motorbikes off road but this is all new to me.

Rubbish compound, hard and not very grippy. The BC are made in Germany, and quite expensive.
    The others are not.

I have used black chilli and cheap rubber queens. The black chilli ones are excellent but do wear a little quick. The cheap ones have very little grip in any conditions and you wish they would wear quickly.

I've been running a pair of mk1 mountain king supersonics with black chilli compound for about a year now, mostly xc, trail and south downs riding. Probably done 700-800mi on them and wear has been quite good, I think I'll get more or leas the same amount of miles out of them again before having to replace, the supersonics are essentially race tyres so I think that mileage is quite good.

Punctures have not been as much of an issue as i thought they'd be, they've also held up well to south downs flint.

They are expensive to buy here in the UK, cheaper if you buy from Germany... Bike-discount.de is where I get my tyres from and their prices are really good.

Thank You all for the replies, I have also been reading that a Mountain King II 2.2 is more around 2" what width is a 2.4 then is that more around a proper 2.2?
