Hi All
The headset on my sons Giant XTC Jr 24" wheel bike is a little ropey and I want to get a new one, which I'm finding a little confusing with all the different types.
I have measure the OD of the bearing and it's 41mm, and the thickness is 7.5mm and the stem on the forks is straight and 1.1/8", I have looked on quite a few web sites and they say about measuring the OD of the frame ( well I think that's what their saying ) at the moment it's fitted with FSA there are no markings on the bearings but there is 36 deg on the cone that covers the top bearing.
They look similar to this http://www.tredz.co.uk/.FSA-Orbit-CE-Ro ... _30658.htm
Can anyone help me out please

If it's one of these, it looks like a standard 1 1/8" external headset.

Thanks for the reply Cooldad.
Same bike only it's a 2009 model, the main difference to the one in the link is you can't see anything at the bottom of the frame to forks junction, the bearing just sits on a sort of metal cup, it's all in side the frame, the one in the link has a sort of a collar showing around the bottom of the frame.0 -
Some pictures maybe.I don't do smileys.

Jess hard to find a 2009 model. Seems to be Poland only.
The headset could be anything as there is no info there.
But I am guessing there is an internal cup and it is a zero stack/ semi integrated/ internal headset
If it is just cartridge bearing go to a bearing shop and pay pence for some more new headset not needed.
Or take some clear pictures and pistons them up. A look in the FAQs above has some info as well."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Looks more like this.

But everything I look at doesn't say what od the bearings are or are they a std od size?0 -
Again read above."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for the reply
I took the bearings out to have a look why the steering was rough I took the seal out to have a look and the bottom one had part of the race missing, there is only a seal on one side, inside the bearing with seal removed it looks like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fsa- ... p-prod2222 but again no sizes on the web site, might be worth drop them a line.
When you say cartridge bearing would that be one with loose ball bearing in it?0 -
If you can't tell what style headset you need then your safest bet would be to take it to your local bike shop and they can size it up (looks like a standard 1 1/8th external headset from the 2009 brochure, not that's necessarily accurate).
Then you know it's done properly.Community police have been on the look out for a vandal by the name of \'The Elusive Lout\'. Any information you could give would be gratefully received.0 -
So still no info on what you have.
Take pictures as you have no idea."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
