Route 62 Coast to coast

I am planning a coast to coast ride for me and one of my friends, We are doing this in order to raise some money for charity. I have looked at a couple of routes and have settled on doing route 62 from southport to Selby. Then from Selby onto Hornsea. I live in south Manchester so have ridden a fair bit of the trans-pennine that passes nearby home but never up into the pennines.
I have a few questions about the tracks and riding on route 62 as it goes up into the hills. How technical does the riding become? I don't want to be riding on black routes for the entire journey but the odd stretch would be ok. I can find routes round the worst bits. I'm not the most experienced offroad.
Does anyone have any specific pointers or sources of general information that they could pass on?
