Shimano 105 PD-5700 pedals discontinued?!

I was just about to buy a set of 105 5700 pedals to find they are now discontinued?! These were always the best value pedals IMHO. Very very similar to the Ultegra 6700 pedals but could be found much cheaper.
My limited research seems to suggest they've been replaced by non series R550 pedals (similar price), but these appear to be very different in design. For a start they're made out of plastic instead of metal.. and as a result appear to be a chunky design. I always liked the low profile 5700s (especially running long cranks).
Should I hunt online for some 5700's (probably paying more than what they should cost) or are these new plastic 550's actually better than they look?

Mmmmm looks like they're actually carbon pedals?
Anyone gone to these from the old 5700/6700 designs. Better or worse?0 -
How hard have you looked? 3 seconds on Google brings up numerous shops selling them for circa £40 with cleats, or £30 without.0

It's entirely possible they are being discontinued but they are hardly difficult to get hold of, or expensive. (Which is what the OP was suggesting.)0 -
The pedals are discontinued. Very few well-known online retailers have any left in stock; the few I've seen have been over £40 and it seems to be only silver (bleurgh) ones remaining25% off your first MyProtein order: sign up via https://www.myprotein.com/referrals.lis ... I want the black ones. But ignoring availability (seems you can still find them at some places - possibly not black ones for the £35ish they used to cost), are these new carbon 550 ones better?0

I don't think they've been around long enough for any major drawbacks to have been revealed... may be a case of 'suck it and see'. They're probably exactly the same but plastic... prefer the metal pedals myself, I can't see the plastic ones lasting as long but who knows, maybe they're just as durable.25% off your first MyProtein order: sign up via https://www.myprotein.com/referrals.lis ... They're only discontinued because Shimano have/ will bring out 5800 pedals, just limited the 5700 groupset will be discontinued. It happens every year or so0

The older Shimano 5700 pedals have been discontinued and replaced with the R550 pedals which is a resin composite at a similar price. The 105 pedals have instead been upgraded to these:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/105-5700c-carbon-spd-sl-pedals-ec053665
which are a carbon pedal and retail at £90.
The new pedals have been developed in line with the shape of the dura ace and ultegra pedals, which is why only the r540's remain in the 'traditional' shimano style. Hope this helps!0
