1,000 mile ride - Cancer Research/Macmillan

I want to do a sponsored solo bike ride from John O'Groats to Lands End later this year with all proceeds split between Cancer Research and MacMillan Cancer support. Has anyone taken on this journey and does anyone have any sound advice?
