Why not a hybrid

Yeah, OK, possible stupid question here so bring on the piss taking.
Thinking of getting in to some CX action so have been looking around at some suitable candidates. Disc brakes seem to be a must but do I need drop handlebars and mechanical discs? Why not just get a hybrid with hydraulic discs and flat bars?
Is it against the racing rules or is there some other reason to have drops?
Fankoo.

Mud clearance would probably be your biggest issue with a hybrid, that and strength of the bike. Lots of courses allow mtbs so flat bars are not the issue0

You can ride flat barred bikes in your local CX league (no bar ends) - the restriction for drop bars only applies to National League events and above.
Whether a specific hybrid is suitable for CX is dependent on things like mud clearance and tyre choice.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
Thanks guys, interesting. At least it wasn't a totally idiotic question.0
