Buying help for a novice.

I had my old mountain bike stolen and so have been forced into buying something new. After riding for about 18 months I kind of now know what my requirements are a bit better and this has made me come to the decision of going down the hybrid road.
I tend to cycle mainly on roads or good tarmac but some of my time is spent on bumpy concrete or bridal paths. I want a bike that is comfortable, reasonably swift on the road but able to drag me up and around a mildly hilly gravel path. I did a few 60+ mile runs last year on my cheap, heavy mountain bike and plan to do more this year but also occasionally do 20 mile gravel track routes.

I have a budget of £500-£650 and after a lot of staring at the computer I have managed to slim it down to 5 or 6 choices but I am clueless as to which will give me what I want and the best spec for my money. I will list them and any advice will be appreciated as indeed will alternative suggestions.

The most expensive and a nice looker but I can't help thinking some of the cheaper bikes have better specs.

Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc 2014 Hybrid Bike - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/crosstrail-sport-disc-2014-hybrid-bike-ec052367#features
Some great reviews of this one.

Specialized Sirrus Elite Disc 2013 Hybrid Bike - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/sirrus-elite-disc-2013-hybrid-bike-ec042536#features
Again great reviews but scared it might be a bit too road specialized .

Trek 8.4 DS 2014 Hybrid Bike - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/84-ds-2014-hybrid-bike-ec054492#features
Like I said I don't really know much about the tech of components and how important they are but I believe this one has a better spec than most of the others?

Scott Sportster 30 2014 Hybrid Bike - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/sportster-30-2014-hybrid-bike-ec056044#features
Someone suggested I consider this.

Lapierre Cross 300 2014 Hybrid Bike - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/lapierre/cross-300-2014-hybrid-bike-ec054585#features
I don't know much about this one, I love the looks, the spec seems nice and I believe they are a fairly good brand.

Some others I have looked at and eliminated (probably without much reason) are Ridgeback Flight 02 2013, Charge Zester 2013, Scott Sub Speed 30 2014 Hybrid Bike.

Any help would be very welcome . I need to get back in the saddle asap but I am worried that I might make a bad choice. Thanks.

    Hello khay,

If most of your riding is going to be on the road you should consider a bike with a rigid fork with clearance for 28-35mm wide tyres and full mudguards, if using all year round. A suspension fork is not necessary on a road bike and with wider tyres and appropriate pressures you should be able to ride a gravel/hard packed bridle path.

Have a look at the post by (Jedibiker Performance hybrid/VS Flat bar road bike) on this forum. Similar question to what you are asking.
