rear shocks

I have a new canyon torque ex and it came with a cane creak double barrel CS, all is good apart from the position of the shock, how it is at the moment I can't really use the CS switch nor can I get an Allen key in to adjust the rebound and compression.
I was thinking could I just simply turn the shock around? But I remember reading somewhere I shouldn't have the shock in a different orientation within the frame, my question is, why shouldn't I have it in a different orientation, and will it actually do any harm?
Thanks
Tom

so long as it doesn't interfere with the frame you can turn it round or upside down0
