mavic elite wheel issue

I've noticed a grinding sound coming from front wheel and at first thought it was some dirt that had got stuck near the brake pad causing the sound.
It now seems it's coming from the hub of the front wheel.
So suggestions?

Seems like you need new front bearings... these are cartridges and cannot be serviced. When they grind, you need to replace them. Ask your LBS to do it for you, unless you know what you are doingleft the forum March 20230

How old/how many miles on your Elites?
Are they Cosmic Elites or Ksyrium Elites?0 -
Sorry they are kytrium elites and are 2012, millage wise I wouldn't say a lot.
How hard are they to replace?
And is there a way to open the hub up to check for sure they need replacing?
I ask as I'd get both front and rear replaced if I did so ( allways best to do both)

Not following your logic... you replace the bearings that need to be replaced, no point in replacing those that are still good... it's not like car tyres that you have to replace the lot.
It's never a difficult job, but if you have to ask how to do it, I suggest you leave it to the LBS...
Basically if you manually rotate the hub and it feels rough, then the bearings need replacingleft the forum March 20230 -
If you fancy trying it yourself the give it a go, it's not really that hard and once you've done it once you'll be all set to do it again.

You'll find the tech documents there telling you how to do it. Basically you'll get the old bearings out by punching them out with a large screwdriver and hammer/mallet. They're goosed anyway so you don't need to worry about wrecking them. The new ones can be tapped in with a socket large enough to fit the outside diameter of the bearing, or you could fashion a press out of some washers, nuts and a threaded length of metal.
Good luck!0 -
I'm still unsure if bearings are actually shot. As there no play at all just this grinding noise that sometimes comes up...:/
Will open them up and have a look to see how dirty they are inside.
Reading this article is interesting.

Yes - but that is the freehub rather than wheelbearings.
Buy SKF ideally (some sizes are cheap, some bizarrely expensive). Copy the bearing number into Ebay with SKF and search.Faster than a tent.......0
