chain lines for idiots

hello
can any body explain in very simple terms what shimano mean when they say the deore chainset has a 50mm chain line?
i understand that it reperesents the distance from the centre of seat tube to where the chain lies, but is that on the inner, middle or outer ring?
im planning on building up a commuting/touring bike using an alfine 8 speed and hope fully a deore tripple (just the middle 36 tooth ring)
the alfine has a chain line of 42mm apparently
any help/advice appreciated
