Can anyone recommend a sportive thats coming up in the next 4 weeks or so. Up to about 50-60 miles. Any advice greatly received.

  • It depends where you are! British Cycling has a sportive calendar on the website that lets you search by region.

  • I'm currently training to do the Leeds Ride It on 9th March which is closeish to you. I'm doing 50 miles but there is a shorter route of 30 miles which I did last year which is ideal for your first sportive and getting used to all that it entails.

+1 for this - I did it last year, and the choice of routes mean it's suitable for most. I signed up to do the 75m, but ended up doing about 80 as I got lost! Ended up in Pately Bridge, dozy get.

It was also very cold, but last spring was freezing so hopefully this year won't be as bad. There are plenty of pit-stops and the cost was towards the cheaper end - about £15 if I remember rightly (although this years £17.50 is also good value).

If I get a place in the Fred Whitton I will probably do it again as a training ride.
  • We haven't had many days this January as cold as it was during the Leeds sportive last year - there was a real risk of snow on the day!

I definitely saw snow last year - it was snow blowing in my face that caused me to miss a turn! :(
  • What about looking in your local area/clubs for Reliability rides? Discovered these last year around our way (Falkirk/Stirling Clubs), 60 miles or so, group rides by ability, normally 5 or 6 groups. Good speeds and company, group riding normally until the last few miles and then the speed ramps up, not unlike a sportive for group riding.
