11-speed 105 a myth or reality?

Hi,
Just wondered if anyone has heard or seen any info on the possibility of Shimano 105 11-speed being released? I'm looking for a new road bike and see that lots of manufacturers are not providing stock to bike shops until the spring. Is this normal for the time of year or is it that they're waiting for a new group set to come out? My dilemma is should I wait a while when I've got money burning a hole in my pocket? Don't really want a 2013 bike with a few quid knocked off.

As 11 speed Ultegra has only just been released, it's probably a while off...

It'll happen, probably late 2014, but as I speculated here it's conceivable they might keep it 10 speed. Unlikely, but conceivable.

I wouldn't wait to buy your bike though, anything could happen.

Probably slated for a 2015 release earliest - first indications would be a trade-show launch in the autumn.

Just how many gears do we actually need?
I reckon two by five was enough.

Remember when the world was 5 speed and top of the range bikes had 6 speed. If you'd told us we'd be on 11 speed bikes in 30 years time we would have been aghast.
My worry is how flimsy chains have become. they don't seem to last long any more.

I would say 105 will go digital before it gains an extra gear.
  • Indexing on a 10 speed is bad enough!
How much power can a probably skinnier chain take?
Think the 11 speed is just another way to get another upgrade out of us.
Sometimes I miss my 9, just because it feels stronger and safer and the 10 is always a pain to set up (Ultegra 6700)

Not enough: bikes, garage space or time.

Think it depends how you ride. I like to spin a relatively high cadence and find myself looking for an 'inbetween' gear more on my 9spd winter bike than my 10 spd nice one. Can easily see that 11spd and a closer cassette would be quite a nice addition.

Yes, but what you REALLY need is 12 speed Dura Ace which will be out in a year or so's time....

I hope not. I want to upgrade to 105 one day and don't even want a the current skinny-as-hell 10 speed chain, never mind 11 speed.

  • My suspicion is that 105 will be upgraded late in the year; but it will stick at 10 speed. Based on nothing at all but it makes sense IMO to have two groupsets at 11 speed, two at 10 speed.

Indexing is bad on 10 speed, really. Mine is perfect aside from the ocasional tweek to the rear barrel adjuster.
