Okay this is a daft question, but I want to be 100% sure before I buy a new crankset, but I currently have a Shimano FC-M311 with a worn outer chainring that needs replacing. I'm trying to work out if I can replace the chainring or if I have to replace the whole thing.

Looking at the breakdown of the crankset (http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 637963.pdf) it appears that it is a single unit and so I'd need to replace everything. If I do need to replace the whole crankset, I'm assuming I can just buy a new one (same size as the old) and not need to replace my derailleur?

And if I do have to pull the crank out, apart from a crank puller (e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Park-Tool-Cotte ... B001VS1M20) is there any other specialist tools I'd need to buy? (Trying to keep this cheap as I was planning to replace the bike in 2015, but if fixing it is going to cost a bit, I might as well do it now. The bike is a Felt Q520 2009 and was only £280 new).

I believe you're in for a whole chainset. Make sure its a standard crank puller not octalink/ISIS. Thats all you'll need. probably do the whole thing for £30.

Quick update, so looking around trying to find a matching (price acceptable) crankset is hard. The current runs 42/34/24 at 175mm. I can either find 42/34/24 at 170mm or 42/32/22 at 175mm. Any recommendations at which way I should go? (I've never tried a 170 but I have no issues with the 175).

I'd keep the arm length the same and go for the smaller granny ring. Will make little difference.
