Winter Jacket Recommendations

What would you recommend for a winter jacket as I've been wearing a fleece and overheating a bit. I've been wearing a cycling t-shirt and then the fleece but think I should get something more suited.
What would you recommend that doesn't break the bank and also what do you wear for ideas when out on the trails?
Thanks.

A good base layer and jacket usually works well. I wear a helly Hansen base layer and an Altura mayhem jacket. About £100 for both.
You could opt for a thermal jacket and then pack a shower proof jacket just in case you get caught out in the rain.0 -
From a poor students pov, a £10 Kipsta baselayer from Decathlon and a t-shirt has yet to let me down - just drop a gear and pedal more if you start to get cold haha!
Regatta and Tog24 have some decent and well priced softshell and/or waterproof stuff if you do fancy spending a few quid. Regatta has a 70% sale today too.0 -
4 degrees and below I wear bib tights under trail shorts, a thermal layer and a zippered windproof jacket... 6/7 degrees and up I replace the thermal layer for a normal cycling t-shirt... whichever scenario I carry a lightweight minimal waterproof layer and when its really cold an additional thermal layer.
IMO I think windproof is a better feature to have over waterproof in a cycling jacket... but that's me, I really struggle in waterproof jackets either overheating or being too cold, windproof works well for me.
You are going to have to experiment a bit to find what works for you... decathlon cycling kit is really quite good for the money, I'd start there if I were you before putting any significant investment in clothing.0 -
What are the Decathlon sizes like? Is a Large a Large or should go larger etc. Thanks.0

The last few years I have been wearing an Altura Nevis through the winter but this year was lucky to pick up an Endura MT500 with 40% off the recommended retail price.
Knocks the socks off of the Nevis for fit, water and windproof performance and also the breatheability is much better.
Although I have paid a lot less than normal price, it was £40 more than I would have paid for the Nevis but having a good quality jacket transforms your ride in winter/wet conditions in my opinion.0
