One off steelie build with full 105

Just finished this build.
I got hold of a very nice NOS 4130 double butted steel frame and the colour gave me the idea of building a bike themed on Jim Clark's 1960 Lotus Formula 1 cars. (I am a bit of an F1 nut and have built a 80's Ferrari themed bike before).
I bought a full 105 group-set in the winter sales and a set of nearly new Shimano R10's from a member on here. A few specialist decals later and her see is!

Prefer the short stem for now as I tend to ride on the hoods and it feels too much of a reach with anything more than the 70cm on it. Hopefully as I get a little fitter (and lose the belly) I'll move forward a bit!
I should have said in the 1st post that it rides absolutely beautifully!0 -
Good shots...0

Raleigh Mtrax 100
Got 1 too, lovely frame, great paint job
Built nicely too...enjoy the ride0 -
Ferrari and then Jim Clarke Lotus? Next one will have to be JPS lotus in gold and black0

Not crazy about the build nor your position but who cares, the star of the show is the paint job and decaling.
Big congrats on the theme concept and execution, you should have done some arty close up pix of it.
Very nice.
(btw your DT STI stoppy thingies go the other way around, but you'll have a bitch of a time to correct it now it's all cabled up)When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.0 -
I love that. But, this you should know - Jim would have gone clipless
Also, ideally you should try to source polished bars - Chapman always liked polished metalwork and chrome even if it meant more weight or, more likely, less strength!
Another option (though it might look terrible) would be red bar tape to match the Lotus steering wheels.Faster than a tent.......0 -
Love that theme0

Love it !! Looks a quality build and as has been said, a JPS theme must be on the cards0

Many thanks for all of the positive comments, and suggestions! I will fix the upside down cable guides as I need to reroute the cabling and I have some small Jim Clark decals to go on. New pics will be on later his weekend, including close ups.
I did consider red for the bars, but it was too OTT. Thinking of the headstem cap to provide that flash of red!
And as for a JPS Lotus themed bike.... watch this space.
And here's a couple of pics of the Villeneuve Ferrari themed bike in case you missed it.

Thats quality! Hope its all campag!? Can imagine Gilles training on that.0

very nice build. theme works well with the frame and goves it an original period feel.
I think the yellow tyres are a little too much though.0 -
Very nice
One thing you may or may not know, the little cam levers on the brake calipers are the quick releases to help get the wheels out.
Yours are pointing up (open ) yet your pads look close as if they have been adjusted in the open position.
As for the stem, it looks to have a fairly slack head angle so your short one probably works pretty well

Brakes and gears need final fettling, but I always fit them in the open cam position as I find that after just one or two rides the pads bed in and the cable has its initial little stretch and then I close the cam and do the final fit. Just a habit I guess.
I put the Jim Clark stickers on and got the upside down cable guides the right way up last weekend, but didn't get it back together before the light went. Final photo's this weekend, promise.0 -

S-A-H-W-H-E-E-T!!!!! Loving your work!!!! When is the Hunt Mclaren M23 being unveiled?;)0

Very smart, love the theme! I think I'd want a yellower saddle on there, maybe a Concor for a classic look although that depends on the shape of your bottom obviously.
Idea for the next theme: how about a John Player Special, using a Raleigh Sprint?

Lot better toned down, however to finish it off: black 105. Now that would rock.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am
