Bash Guard Sizes

I'm looking to replace the largest of the three chain rings with a bash guard, I know that the bolt centre diameter I need is 104mm but the other size option is the number of teeth.

Do I have to go for the number of teeth on the middle ring or slightly more than this so that its larger than the middle ring.

For info the middle chain ring is 32 teeth.

Get a 32-36 bash so that you have the space to fit a slightly bigger ring if you want.
Halfords have got Hope bash rings very cheap at the moment.
