Well, I've just taken delivery on this:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/crat ... -prod88193
And it is awesome, light, comfy and a great price. I took a chance knowing I could return if I needed too, but I'm delighted with it.

As ever, post a budget and someone comes back with something that exceeds it (albeit just a little bit). :) I tried a Giro Monza and found it cheap and nasty as well as a bad fit. Fit is the big thing of course, someone's recommendation means nothing if it doesn't fit. However, I tried a few and not only did this fit perfectly, it is really good quality:
    http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/bontrager-circuit-road-bike-helmet-2012-p200033
  • Very happy with the cheap specialized Align I got for £30

I've never got on with helmets in the past and I have an odd shaped head which very little fits properly. Tried it in the local shop alongside some much more expensive ones and it was the best for me, and has remained comfortable a few hundred miles later
  • Cheers guys there's a couple of good Reccomends there! Has anyone any experience with the mavic or met helmets as I'm likeing the look of those ;)

Anti-recommendation here - Giro Monza. I've had three (including two warranty replacements) and the tightening mechanism on the back broke on all three. Avoid!

My last 2 helmets have been MET, a Terra MTB and a Veleno, sort of road/MTB. Both really good and only changed due to age. The Valeno has nice gel pads that don't get all sweaty and stinky! Was about £60 IIRC.
    If you like the look of the Cratoni there is this under budget;

  • The cratoni one looks nice, there seems to be big discounts on them,I wonder how easy the yellow logos could come off ?
Cheers I think that's the front runner ATM.

  • I've got the mavic syncro, its a very nice helmet. I find it comfy, it is quoted as weighing 300g, the padding is in just the right places and I like its shape, it comes with a detachable visor and it has 22 vents.

I have a Spesh Propero II, comes in at £70. As this is above budget i would suggest a Spesh Echelon £50

I have the Cratoni terron I got in the summer in red & silver (it was on offer then too) cracking helmet for the money and pretty lightweight - I'm really pleased with it.

Limar Ultralight Pro104 can be found for about £60, and ticks a lot of boxes - light (170g!), well vented, non-mushroomy, light, looks good (in an understated way), reasonably comfortable. Did I mention it was light? The tightening mechanism does feel a little flimsy (although it's still working fine after 8 months of almost daily use) and the fit is more oval than other hemets, so probably worth trying on before buying if possible.

Specialized Propero 2 can be had for £60 if you shop around. Its an exceptional helmet for the money and I couldn't recommend it enough! (and here is some more credible evidence - http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/protection/helmet-standard/product/review-specialized-propero-ii-helmet-12-45872/)

(+ loads of LBS stock specialized so chances are you can try one on before you buy without too much effort)

Look to see what the pro's were wearing 3/4 years ago and no doubt the same model will now be way down each of the manufacturers line's so should come in on your budget ... If it was good enough then, it'll be good enough now ...
  • All sorted now guys I picked up a giro savant for £40 from the lbs and it seems ace, thanks too everyone ;)

You're obviously new to road cycling ... If you're budget is £60 you spend £80, not £40 ... tsk ...

Its sad.. but true haha
  • I am quite new tbh and saving penny's for other shiny things! I was using a 661 mtb helmet with the peak removed so this does feel a significant upgrade it weighs as much as a lot of the blingy ones ;)
