Bent rear mech?

Changed chain and cassette today and was pedalling bike around the driveway to check all was ok, when I felt the gears skipping and heard a sound like something hitting the spokes. Went back to garage to examine, and noticed that the two jockey wheels of the rear dérailleur were not inline as they are meant to be, but instead, the lower one was angled closer to the wheel, meaning that when in gears 6 or 7 to 9, parts of the derailleur hits the spokes. The gear skip because of this too. I didn't touch the derailleur at all when I was changing the stuff, and it was fine the ride before, so I don't know what is wrong ( bent something?) or what I did wrong or how to fix it... Advice quickly please as I would like to bike tommorow! Thanks

Usually it's a bent mech hanger. Check that. If your frame is steel then you should be able to bend it back, if it's alloy, be careful!

I would say yeah, but it seems straight, and the upper jockey wheel is aligned...

And it as all fine before?

Sounds like you have messed up somewhere most likely bending the hanger somehow.

Pics needs to tell you where you messed up.

Seems straight... Assuming its perfectly straight, what else could it be?

Either the hanger is bent, or the mech cage, or something is loose.

How did you measure the new chain?

The chain length is correct, I know how to do it. Something may be loose though, as I can manually put it straight, for it to fall back to bent, how can I tighten it?

Check anything that might be loose, like the mech.

Lesson is don't put the bike down on the mech when you take the wheel off.

    Done.

£35 on Merlin and simple to fit.

Well they did do it on the same day, and the fitting was comparatively cheap (comparatively). The problem with me is, I I know how to fix a lot of stuff, but I don't know when to do a certain job, so I take the bike to the LBS, ask them what's wrong, 2 secs later they've done it and hand me a bill, oh well at least it means I don't have to wait for it to be delivered...

I try to do most stuff myself, but when I need the LBS if I buy parts from them they'll fit them for free.

£40+ for fitting is not cheap. It is 4 bolts and 2 screws.

It was £15 for the labour... £50 something for the part...

Doesn't matter what way you cut it.

What was the other £10 on?
