What was your hilliest ride of the year?

One metric that I like to look at is the amount of feet climbed per mile. My top this year was 202 ft per mile any better?

My hilliest ride of the year was also one of my shortest, out in Taiwan in June riding out from Chiayi to Alishan mountain and back.
According to RWGPS that works out around 245 ft/mi or 4200m in 90km, but I reckon that's quite a large overestimate.
Still one of the most painful rides I have ever done though, due mainly to the staircase like roads out there!

50 miles and 8900 feet (178 feet per mile). That was in the French Alps on a baking hot day in July.

    Col de L'encrenaz
    Col de Joux Verte
Col De Joux Plane (Morzine side)

It ruined me for about 2 days!

I did the Legs of Steel in October, just under 100 foot/mile if I am doing the sums right!

    Yay another willy waving thread.
Being from London, unless I do hill reps of going up and down I'll never get a proper hilly ride in.

So my hilliest was the 160mile ride the other day which topped at 7100ft climbing. Which is something around 50ft/m

  • 202 ft/mile, baking hot day in August in the Alps. (96 km 3700 m) hopefully my maths is correct!?
    Col du Encrenez
    Col de la Ramaz
    Col de Jambaz
    Col de la Grande Taillet

Irreparable puncture on Encrenez descent, furthest point from our van with no shops in 20km.
Had to leave my friend in a bar for 3 hours, borrowed his wheel and rode back, to then drive back to pick him up.
    Nightmare!

You can easily top that around London if you want though, I did the same amount of climbing in 100km less on the hell of the ashdown.
I know what you mean though, it can be a bit dull around the SE.

probably got something better than 117ft, did the legs of steel and the devil in the downs also.

But surely its the most climbed on a single day or night ride?

Otherwise we can count things like cob lane? which is 475ft per mile. (190ft 0.4 miles)

I live in Portugal but have been back in the UK staying with the in-laws in Oakley for a few weeks - been out with the NHRC a couple of times on their clubruns. Nice bunch.
  • Taking my folks dog for a walk gave the most impressive ratio at 154 ft per mile. Though it was a easy roll with only one hill, land is steep and hilly there but we gained height gently since my roadie is a SS.

Returning to my folks place from the local town is 135ft per mile and is actually hard work with steep ramps etc.

To be honest the ratio doesn't fit well to effort for my rides at least.

Nice, hope you've been enjoying the weather!

I've been riding with CCB for the past couple of months, we'll be out Sunday if your still around.

Indeed. I lost the return half of my GPS when I rode from Samoens to Columbiere via Col du Romme. That adds up to 236 feet per mile over 29 miles. I didn't go back via Romme so if I counted the return trip I'd get a less impressive statistic despite the longer ride!

Biggest climb was 3243 feet of Joux Plane but I don't think I've even beaten 10,000 feet on a single day this year.

    100 miles and 10000ft of Pennine: http://app.strava.com/activities/85827824
Plus 1700ft on the way there: http://app.strava.com/activities/85644939

So over 12000 ft in a day but only around 100ft/mile
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
  • Without a doubt, riding in the King of the Pennines sportive in September.Hilly from the start of the 100 miles.
