How 'fit and forget' are modern computers - don't want anything fancy just distance and speed but want something I can fit and forget about and that requires no messing around with after every ride or two.

It depends on your budget but GPS is the most fit and forget you can get. It depends on your budget though I suppose.
Stuff like Cateye Stealth 10, Bryton Rider 20 etc.0 -
cateye wireless jobby for about £20 is fine.0
