hi all,
I have a carrera Vulcan MTB which I purchased over a year ago, reading up on reviews for the Vulcan reviewers have mentioned that the bike should have parts upgraded eg forks and wheels to make the bike perform better, could anybody suggest a decent set of wheels and forks to upgrade my bike??( looking at spending between 100-150 on forks and similar price for wheels) cheers.

Post or link to the spec. Most people don’t memorise it.

Merlin are doing a Recon silver TK fork for £134 and mavic crossride wheels fir £127, both with a further 10% off if you buy in the next few days. Then get a good pair of tyres!

If you search "Epicon" on Ebay there's a UK seller selling brand new 100mm Epicon X2s in white or black for £135 (I just ordered a black set to replace the XCR on my 2007 Kraken). Lighter than the Recon Silver (alloy stanchions compared to steel on the Recon). They can be converted easily from 80 to 140mm in 20mm intervals - gonna swap mine to 120mm before fitting.

£125 will get you hand XM319s on Shimano hubs with DT Swiss spokes here (hand built):

You can get a Recon Silver TK Solo Air for £150 on CRC: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/rock ... -prod71178

I'd be inclined to say its a better fork than others listed so far. As mentioned by mattv, you can get the coil version of it for £134, here: http://www.merlincycles.com/rockshox-re ... 49396.html

No you can't - that's an out of stock 2012 fork. I'd rather have the Epicon for less money (lighter, with ally stanchions rather than steel, and travel adjustable). I paid £121.50 for mine.

I'd take the Epicon over the Silver.

Wheelwise, these are a great choice http://www.merlincycles.com/fulcrum-red ... 62834.html better than crossrides and lighter, or these http://www.merlincycles.com/pair-shiman ... 59840.html The Merlin Equalizer whel is also great but you need centrelock discs with them.

The Fulcrums are a good deal. I have used a pair for about three years with nothing more than adjusting the bearings and lubing the freehub pawls. Light stiff and look good. Interestingly weird spoke pattern as well.

I suspect the spoke pattern is more marketing than real benefit, but yes, the Sons have done 2 years (bought used) and are still in perfect working order.

There is a logic there, whether it actually makes a difference I don't know, but I'm not the lightest, and haven't managed to bend them. Anyway 24 spokes makes me feel like a racing snake, even if the snake is a bit of a python.

  • Great I was just thinking about upgrading the fork on my vulcan. I was looking at the epicons earlier today, think I'll order this week

    They look like great value

My mates got the same bike I lent him my reba's just to try as he didn't think he was worth the £100-150 second hand, he bought some the next day. In other words change your forks keep the wheels and use them until there completely dead. The wheels on his have done aboutttt 14,000 miles of everything from Dalby forest to fort William and mine on my Kracken did 12,000. So in my opinion I would wait with the wheels there not a sufficient enough upgrade to warrant the extra money at least then you don't care about buckling or denting them.
