Hi everyone,

Decided to build up a winter bike for myself, so I can learn some more maintenance skills, and thought it would be a good project over Christmas.

Unfortunately, I'm slightly stumped on running my gear cables on the Ultegra 6800. I followed this video up until now, and it has been great, but the 6800 STi's seem to be different.

I run the cable through from the outside of the lever, with the cable coming through to the inside. There is a white clip which opens up, but I cant seem to work out how to get the cable to come back on itself and through the wire guide towards the bars. (sorry cant get pics at the moment, but if anyone has installed 6800 and would be able to help it would be greatly appreciated.)

Cheers.

  • Can't paste the link as I'm on my phone, but Google si.shimano and you'll get to the workshop manuals on all Shimano kit. You should find everything you need on there.
  • Hi,

Just done this myself - the link to the manuals is http://si.shimano.com/#seriesList/38. The file is under ST-6800 and is the red DM doc. Basically the cables run through the shifter from the inner side. You need to flick the white cable guide out, run the cable and run it out into the cable outer, then click the white cable guide back into place. There is a cable end with a spline on it that sits on the end of the cable outer and slots into the exit hole on the shifter.

Looking at your post I suspect that you are running the cables through the wrong way. The entry point is the upside down keyhole on the inner side of the shifter.

I hope that makes sense! if not then the dealers manual for the shifter on the site above has pictures!

  • anyone give a clue how to remove the gear cable when you want to replace it! I can see where it enters but cant see where the end is secured or how to remove the old cable
  • done it!
