Wheelset - what's hot?

Hi All,

I'm riding a Giant Defy 2013. It has the Giant S-R2 wheelset on it.

I'm looking at upgrading the wheelset, as Santa supplied me with some Wiggle Vouchers. I'm around 74kg.

The only other set of wheels I've ever ridden bar these, are the Shimano R500's I stole for a go of my Missus Lappiere. They felt so much stiffer for the couple of Km I tried.

I'm looking around the £200-250 budget.

Looking at something like the Fulcrum 5's? Maybe Campagnolo Scirocco 35 Clinchers? or would anyone suggest anything from Shimano?

Better still get Wiggle to price match Ribble and get them £34 cheaper still! Always worth buying from Wiggle for their no quibble 360 day free return policy!

Ribble only have the Campag freehub version. Almost definitely his Defy will be Shimano groupset..? Wiggle will only price match like for like product.

Could price match Evans to save a fiver....

Alternatively sit tight and wait, Wiggle in the last 6 months have had them at 20% off more than once.

But in hindsight the Sciroccos are a similar design and weight for little more.

Yeah, but the OP has a Wiggle voucher, not a Ribble one... :?

Still, he could always use it for something else. The Ultegra wheels have to be good value at that price. Or would Wiggle price match?

Considering apparently they are no longer supported by Madison, they are crap at any price...

Anyway, the 6800 can be had for £45 more. I'd imagine Madison are still supporting those.

My mate just bought Zondas and they look amazing, so light too. But I think he said the rider weight limit was pretty low.

Under 82kg is no issue for the wheels so the OP will be fine. Between 82kg and 108kg just means you need to get them checked every so often. I'm 87kg and I'm not worried.

I bought the Ultegra recently (at £200 from Ribble) as my bike has an Ultegra groupset, so they are a good match cosmetically. They are fine wheels. As, I'm sure are the Zondas. If money really doesn't come in to it, I'd buy whichever you prefer the look of. I doubt you'll notice any performance difference.

If you're looking to buy wheels that look "hot", as per your title then buy the ones you think look "hot". Don't rely on someone else's vision of what is showoffy / bling.

If you want useful wheels then there has been some good advise on this forum.
