Servicing an old 3 speed hub

Just collected a new (yeah, well) bike, a Universal shopping bike with 3 speed hub gear and tartan shopping bag. For its age its OK, tyres are good, bit of rust to the chrome. Weighs a godawful amount.

The hub doesn't appear to be giving me all 3 gears; the cable seems to be moving through 3 positions though. There's a tiny oil filler on the hub (its got a cap on)(+ drain? Nothing comes out when its inverted). How much / what grade / how does one get oil in there?

The hub looks like it has the brand '333' stamped on it ('BBB' ?). Any suggestions?

Ta.

Probably Sturmey Archer but have a look at Sheldon Brown for servicing instructions.

    Or maybe Shimano

In my youth I rode bikes with Sturmey Archer 3 and 5 speed hubs. I remember drizzling oil in through the filler hole using an oil can from the shed. It was the consistency of motor oil, and was almost certainly nicked from the power station where my dad worked. Allegedly. (He died a while ago, so it's probably safe to go public now)

I never delved into the innards of the things though; they never went wrong!
