I'm after a new headset as mine is feeling a bit rough, on the bearings is 1-1/8" 36°x45° IS-ITALIAN. Is it possible to just replace the bearings rather than the whole lot and does anyone have any recommendations.

Thanks
Andrew

If you have the patience and a careful hand you can take the bearings apart and clean and regrease and they can be as good as new. Done this a few times with headset bearings. But if you want to just get new bearing they can be bought. Make sure you get the exact ones as even a few degrees difference will not fit.

you can buy replacement bearing units. Check ebay and Superstar. Both have 45x36deg units.

They can only be cleaned and regreased if there i no pitting on the races, if there is they will never be smooth again.

you only move you headset about 45 degrees or so in either direction so pitting has not as much effect as on a fully rotating bearing so you can extend the life of them for a few months with a clean and grease. I have been doing so for years so I know what I'm talking about.
  • Would these be the correct type of bearings to replace the old ones with, http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=810 . Is there much difference with going to ceramic bearings apart from a lighter wallet.
