Shimano gear issues

I've recently installed some Shimano Acera M360 gear changers as I upgraded my brakes. I've noticed that when I'm out riding that the number on the lever doesn't match up with the cog I'm on, it's always 1 out so 8 on the changer is actually cog 7. How can I correct this?

Index the mech properly. Are you actually getting all eight gears?I don't do smileys.

No I'm only getting 7 of the 8,0

Then you haven't indexed them properly. Read Parktools and start again.I don't do smileys.

Sounds like a loose cable to me.
Shift all the way to gear 1, so your shifter is showing 1. Have a pull on your gear cable, if its loose then thats the problem. Leave it selected on 1, undo the bolt clamping it to your mech, pull it and make sure its tight when you tighten it up.0 -
Or the limit screws are out, or the cable is too tight, or the cable is too loose,
So just index them again, and do a proper job.I don't do smileys.

At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, what's Parktools and where can I find it? I'm pretty new to this bike malarkey hence the daft sounding questions.....0

Take it to the lbs if not use to doing it, you will wreak the chain and cassette0

You may mess up the derailleur as I have done in the past, but the chain and cassette will be unaffected, cheeseboy0
