    He would have had more than 7000 miles out of that. My wifes veloce chainrings have done more than that and they are almost pristine well they would be if I cleaned them. My centaur ring probably have 3000 miles on them and not a hint of wear. chain rings get in that state after not many miles if the chain is never changed. Yes the price is not cheap even the trade price is high. I would get TA rings as a replacement.What chainset is that as TA make many campag fit chainrings.

    TA do 135 BCD 10 speed U-T rings (Tivano), a 135 BCD 10 speed rings (no name) suitable for modern P-T chainsets, 135BCD 11 speed horus rings for athena, record and super record. There is also the horus pro.

    For compact chainsets there are the nerius rings and the slightly lighter sryius pro.

    At what point does it become necessary to change a chain ring, how critical is it?

    If it's not changed I assume it will wear out chains quicker and therefore cassette.

    I have a nice new chain to put on but would rather do it at the same time.

    Mine has done 8000 miles +
