What is this "extra wheel" for on this rear mech?

I can see 2 jockey wheels as per normal but what is that third wheel thing for?

    think they called them "rollamajigs" when they sold them years ago.... reduces tight bends on the derailleur cable.

    Shadow mechs now eliminate their need.

    It is just a cable guide and part of the mech. Not a rollamajig.

    Put the mech part number into google.

    I've seen dozens of those XTR mechs and never seen that on one.

    I will save you the trouble. It is an early M951 RR 8spd mech. Later versions did not come with the rotary cable guide.
