Trying to figure out which Shimano Sora 9 speed RD I should go for..

I am trying to run a 34/50 compact with 11-30 cassette on a road winter bike. Should I go for the GS or the SS?

Thanks

  • Hi, I'd say go for the GS, the shorter cage may work but 28 teeth is about it's limit. The GS works fine with a 32 so you should have no problems on a 30.

I run 1 x 10 11-32 on my bike and use the Sora SS rear mech. It also works with an 11-36 cassette as well. However, I think you would need the GS when using a compact chainset because of the total range of teeth involved.

The GS mech will give you a bit more chain range if that makes sense.

according to ribble/shimano, I can use either. The total capacity is 35. The Sora SS can manage up to 37 and the GS can do 41. As for max t they can both go up to 32t. I've since found that a few people would recommend the SS due to better/faster shifting, so was going to change my order until I realised it's a winter bike so prob won't make a huge difference and I'd rather be safe than sorry getting the GS.
