N-1+1, maybe. Carbon v Alu etc

Considering new bike time. Not sure why, just, y'know, it's been a while. And the Boardman might be a bit large. And I've barely been out in a couple of months so I need something shiny to prompt me to MTFU and get back out more... right? And I'm down from 5 bikes to 2. Anyway, enough justification.
Currently have the Boardman Team Carbon and the fixed Condor. Keeping the Condor for commuting.
Considering swapping the Boardman for something like this
http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=3285
It's alu. But good alu, and Di2. Vs entry level carbon.
Canyon Alu Ultegra Di2 vs Boardman SRAM Rival.
Is it an upgrade, a downgrade, a sideways step, none of the above? It'll be mostly club runs and, if I sort out my fitness again, a little racing (Cat 4 though, so it'll be fitness rather than worrying about the bike).
Any suggestions, or just use it as an excuse to do some vicarious bike shopping.

I'm currently hooking it about on one of these...

(obviously not as super amaze-y lovely as it's carbon sister, but Nth degrees cheaper)
Plus, it's CHEAP here
You could use the change to upgrade to Di2, if you're so inclined.0 -
Di2 and a great frame/finishing kit here: http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/scott- ... 13-p207813 ? Or treat yourself and save just shy of £4k on RRP: http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/scott- ... 13-p207808
Ridley Excalibur for just shy of £2k is a pretty good deal too: http://www.pearsoncycles.co.uk/store/pr ... Excalibur/"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

I mention an aluminium bike and get suggested a £9k full DA di2 beauty
Good work Sir, but it's probably beyond my wallet and certainly beyond my fitness right now (I've been, *shudder*, running a bit lately)
The first one though... that's tempting. Wonder if I could justify it as a company bike0 -
Given that you mention the Boardman might be a bit large, perhaps some money on a proper bike fit might be a good first port of call?
Might also help work out which geometry is best for you. Which seems a reasonable thing to do before dropping £2k on N+1.
Personally I think I'd be looking for a decent carbon ride with Ultegra gruppo and keep the rest of the money (or put it towards some nice wheels).
There's no denying that di2 is very shiny though.0 -
Certainly will have a bike fit.
I did about 18 months ago and they said they were surprised that the bike seemed to fit me well (it's a 58cm/L) - but at barely 5'11" and fairly flexible I think I could drop a frame size without much problem, so I think the question will be asking for my ideal frame size rather than whether I can fit the one I have.
I doubt I'll stretch to Dura Ace Di2 though, I'll probably go for Ultegra Di2. Always assumed carbon, but a few of the reviews of the Canyon made me consider AL.
Guess I need to see what the difference between the carbon frame on Canyon CF SLX vs AL SLX is, because on an otherwise identical spec then the carbon is £900 more (not a problem necessarily, just curious to see a comparison)0 -
Also currently looking for a new bike. Considering one of these..

Get the Canyon. Also 58cm frame and you are 5'11? Sounds way too big.

He's not really 5'11. He's tiny.What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?0

I guess the answer to that is whether I want to spend the difference...cyclingprop wrote:He's not really 5'11. He's tiny.0 -
You're my height basically. You should really be on a 54/5/6.
Might be worth dropping Canyon UK a line, they may have some options you can test ride.

Oh and go for the Carbon frame, in Athena flavour.

One of my Sunday ride pals has one of those. It looks very smart and his DA build is light as a feather. Of course yours will be campag, naturally, but it'll probably be just as nice.0 -
@dhope - If you do go Canyon make sure you let them have a copy of your race licence, there are discounts to be had! http://www.canyon.com/_en/service/sponsoring.html

Just ordered a Roadlite AL 7.0. After consultation with a well known bike fitting specialist I have ordered a large which I never would have done otherwise as I'm 5'8" dead on. If I'd gone for the Rose with the same top tube I'd have been ordering a small!Kinesis Racelite 4s disc

I'm 6ft 2 and I went for a large (55.4 TT) with a 110mm stem. More comfortable on it than my 58cm Cervelo. I think I am all legs with a shorter torso though.0 -
do you feel comfy on the condor? if yes, take a note of all the measurements and you've saved yourself a hundred quid on a bike fit"I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"
