Where is this "hole" located? Is it on the braking surface of the front and rear rims? Does the "hole" go all the way through?

Reason I ask is that several manufacturers drill a small indent in the braking surface to act as a wear indicator so that when the indent (hole?) disappears it's time for a new rim.
  • +1, Shimano RS rims all have this, it's the wear indicator.

err, nothing wrong with them. You are referring to the drainage holes which are needed due to the open eyelet design. Rims like Open Pro don't need them because of the double eyelet design which prevents water ingress.

After a wet ride, just turn the wheels until the hole is at the bottom and leave overnight to drain out all the water you have taken for a spin...

It is not the wear indicator, which is a punched indent.
  • its just below braking surface, thanks oh and bobbington thats a first, that had i have known prior to purchase i wouldnt have bothered, because around the hole after a little time the paint will bubble and flake, and never heard of an upside down wheel can not think of any thing worse, arrive home wet through after wet ride oops must turn my wheel upstide down to drain, now where is that hole dam its dark, but thanks for info, not for me and isnt in any literature, re wheels thanks again

It's a drain hole. it's standard on most shimano wheels.

Just interested in why you think the paint will flake? Is the principle not identical to every other spoke hole on the rim? They're manufactured and treated in exactly the same way, so by extension should you not expect them to do exactly the same?
  • My RS20s have the same hole. No probs.
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks

it's pretty clear on this picture here: http://road.cc/content/image/77305-shim ... wheels-rim

That's the first non-shopping link (so still front page) that came up when internet searching the rs31.
