Brake pads that are kind to alloy rims?

Anything out there any good?

IME Shimano stock pads are pretty hard on rims braking surfaces, looking for something a bit softer! Don't mind changing pads often, but want my rims to last!

Cheers :)

  • Rubber on metal cannot be hard... in the rockwell scale there is an abyss between the two. The problem is rubber is a magnet for particles and debris, so the solution is to regularly check and clean your pads... a softer pad won't make no difference

Yepp, the answer is regularly cleaning the grey crud off rims (I find baby wipes work perfectly and are handy) and then dropping the wheel out and cleaning off the brake pads, with the odd file them/clean 'em well session.

Swiss stop and Koolstop pads work great, btw.

Koolstop salmon are definitely kinder to rims as well as giving more powerful braking. I have used them for several years on road and touring bikes. But it is still important to clean your rims regularly and to pick out any bits of grit or metal from the pads.
