edited December 2013 in MTB buying advice
Hi guys, new user looking for a little advice, i am 45 yrs old and was a keen mountain biker for 10 yrs until an accident in 2007 forced me to sell my beloved klein pulse pro. Now my arm has fully healed i am keen to get back into the saddle and have £900 to spend on a new bike, i have decided i will either get a 2014 boardman pro 29er or the previous ht pro, both bikes look amazing. Now here is my dilema, i sat on a pro 29er medium frame in halfords, the seatpost was almost to the bottom and when i was off the saddle my crotch was worryingly rested on the top tube :? so maybe a small frame would suit me better, but with the huge wheels would this be a no no? i could get the previous ht pro in small frame but i have read some bad reviews of the avid brakes on them plus the spec on the new 29er looks a little better? correct me if i am wrong please. Any advice would be wonderful as this decision is starting to give me a headache. Hope to see some of you on the trails this coming year, all the best, shaun.

small frame is going to be a better fit probably - why buy 29 - plenty of 26 still around
  • would be quite happy with another 26, but going off what i have read, the 29 has shimano and the older has sram and avids or are they equal? also heard the older model has bb30 issues which have maybe been resloved on the newer model. I went into local cube mtb stockist for a quick look round and the sales guy said 26ers will be obsolete in 2-3 yrs . Does anyone here ride a 29er with a small frame? or has anyone upgraded from a ht pro to the pro 29er? it has taken me a year to put money aside for the new bike, would love to know i would be happy with whatever decision i make and not buy one and regret not buying the other. Hope all this makes sense!

How tall are you? I'm 5'9" and ride a small Morewood Kwela 29er and a medium Boardman FS Pro, both fit perfectly, although the seat post may be a little high on the Morewood...

Pic to give you an idea of mine :-

  • I am 5`6.5" and my inside leg is 30" I had visions of a small frame on a 29er looking totally out of proportion, but looking at yours it looks fine. I think in my mind i`d choose to get the ht 29er, but the older ht pro at a hundred quid cheaper is very tempting.

It looks slightly out of proportion there too as it's angled against the sign, better pic here if you excuse the model, lol :-

Personally, I'd buy the bike that fits you best, irrelevant of wheel size. ;)
  • Thats great, thnx broona. I think i will go for the 29er, i will ask halfords to get a small frame in, then i can compare them side by side.
  • The older bike has x9 sram . Having ridden with shimano xt and now sram x9 on a ht pro carbon I would say there's little to choose . My avid brakes are excellent , the bb30 issue dates back years to a time when some bearings lacked factory lubrication . Mine has been trouble free since 2012.

With those dimensions you definitely need a small, your torso must be relatively short (I have the same inside leg and am 5'9") and you'll need to keep the cockpit length down.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • thnx guys, definately food for thought. I could get the ht pro and with the money saved i could get some nice accessories, just got to get over the thought that newer is always better which i know isn`t always the case. Had a look at the top tube of the 29er and small frame is 590 mm and seat tube is 406mm compared to 610mm and 457mm on the medium. i definately need to get my backside on a small frame 29er before i make a decision.

As as keen 29er man, forget 26 for starters, like driving a ford escort when everyone else has a ford focus. As an ex boardman rider, they are ace bikes, get one. As for what choice of one...hmm, if I was buying another I'd get the pro ht, as for the avid brakes, I have three bikes with avid brakes, if they were that bad, I wouldn't have three bikes with avid brakes.
  • Do you mean you would get the pro 29er or the older ht pro?
  • I've just got the Boardman Team 2014 it's a 650 wheel in a 18" frame, I'm 5'8" and it fits me fine really like the bike took me ages to find the right one, I'm a total newbie on bikes but I have hit the nail on the head with this one.

    I'm a 29er fan.
  • ive got a 26 2013 pro medium and im 5ft 8 . fits perfect and no issues with bb in a 1000 miles . avid brakes are superb and I prefer sram to anything else . I go out with friends who own 29ers and I always keep up , you wont notice any difference . superb bike and very light for the money
  • Thank you for all your help guys, i just need to decide if it`s worth the extra £100 for a newer model with 29" wheels. There is a small 29er boardman on ebay atm and it doesn`t look out of proportion at all, ( to me anyway ) Boardman pro 29er v boardman pro ht + helmet , lights , lock and a pump, decisions, decisions!!
  • Just seen this, listed as coming soon, is it possible to fall in love with a mountain bike?
