Looking to get my first road bike after christmas and my knee op. Got a max budget of £500. Looking at new only really.

Have seen the following

Felt F95 for £399 on Wiggle
Triban 5
Giant defy 5

Never rode a road bike before so kinda nervous but looking forward to getting outband about.

Also as I enjoy night Mtb'ing and hoping to do the same on a road bike. Will my magicshine Mtb light be ok, or do I need road specific ones? Be for unlit country roads.

Also have a look at the current sales for 2013 bikes. They are brand new but reduced now the 2014 bikes have arrived.

One thing to mention when you buy a road bike is about your knee opp. Road bikes have to be setup more accurately to fit the rider than mountain bikes as you don't move around the bike as much when riding. Otherwise you can get pain or stiffness on longer bike rides. For example I get pain in my knees if the saddle is in the wrong position on the rails. Now in the right position it is pain free when riding for three hours or more. Check the web for road bike setup advice.

Yeah i don't know if SPD pedals will be suitable for a bit as I'm having part of my meniscus removed or all if its more torn than he thought.

I'm gonna go and sit on some road bikes to see what size I'm at. As My MTB is 18 inch but i also fit on a 20inch. I'm 5ft 10 with long ish legs.

I don't use SPD's as I find light weight flats more comfortable.

What flat pedals do you use?

Nukeproof electrons, they were the lightest ones I could find that offered a good stable platform without spd or clips.
