Bike Build

Hey Everyone,

I am looking to build my bike from scratch to take up some downhill biking once again.
I used to do this regularly in my youth however life took over and years on I'm itching to get back on it, my only issue is there are literally hundred's if not thousands of frames available, so I thought why not ask you all for your input on a good lightweight frame, components(but mostly the frame) to build from, also if you have any suggestions on good sites to source please shout out.

Thanks,

Rob

Lightweight Downhill sounds like an oxymoron.

If you want a proper downhill bike (i.e one for pure DH not riding up to the top again) and you want to build it light and you have no mentioned budget then I would look at a Carbon Santa Cruz V-10, pretty much as light as a DH frame gets but if you are looking for something with a DH orientation but able to be ridden up as well we are in a different market entirely.

Give us more details what you want and what your budget for the frame is.

    Budget budget budget!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Thanks for your replies....my post is a bit wooly, by lightweight dh I just meant something that I can do some dh but can actually ride it back up again, something with a bit of mobility.
Budget is a tricky one I will spend what is needed to obtain a good frame, now this doesn't mean I have £££££££'s to spend but having looked on ebay there were a number of frames/bikes going for between 500-1000 but I'm not sure what's a good frame or not?

Well I made a sensible reply in one of the other threads, but that thread got deleted, probably because there were 3 of them.

Nukeproof Mega AM or TR... not that I'm biased :)
    Current:
    NukeProof Mega FR 2012
    Cube NuRoad 2018
    Previous:
2015 Genesis CdF 10, 2014 Cube Hyde Race, 2012 NS Traffic, 2007 Specialized SX Trail, 2005 Specialized Demo 8
  • Are you sure you mean DH - as in full face helmet, body armor, Danny Hart type stuff, or do you mean more cross country, UK trail center red and black runs (which include trick down hill trails, but not full on DH trails)

The distinction is hugely important in you getting the right type of bike and if you're unsure you need to look into it a bit more to clarify.

Titus El Guapo sounds about why you want, which is an AM bike not a DH.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Cheers for the suggestions guys, much appreciated.

Regarding my rather general indication of a DH bike I would say not full on more trail as suggested .

CRC have Nukeproof Mega TR frames and complete bikes very cheap at the moment. Great bike for not too much money.

Mega AM for around 900 or the TR for 850 for a 26 inch wheel version looks about right - pedalable but with a downhill trail orientation would be my choice - for a bit more money a Bronson or a Nomad would fit along with many other frames (Transition Bandit/Covert etc) if you look on ebay then maybe look for something in the 140-160mm travel area from the last couple of years and you will not be a million miles off your target.

  • You're welcome to make me an offer on my Bionicon Reed frame if you want. Should fit well with what you described.

Thanks everyone, great suggestions, I'm still undecided on which one to go for, I've been looking at some reviews on Bike Radar just to get an understanding of which are considered good all rounders.

    Cheers,

  • You are not looking for DH bike, but for Enduro bike I think.

Enduro - pretty nice downhill abilities with possibility to go uphill and flat. Like 140-160mm rear and front suspension. Weight 13kg-16kg (lot of depends on tyres).

    Examples:
    Commencal Meta
    Banshee Rune 2
    Knolly Chilcotin
    Santa Cruz Heckler

or even lighter, trail bikes like:
    Santa Cruz Blur LT
    Knolly Endorphin

    Bikes like that.

    Umm, why you think so?

I think Enduro bike is perfect for those requirements.
