Rebuilding my winter hack. Its based around a saracen xile frame. Am looking for a cheap chainset 8 or 9 spd. Needs to be tall enough for road commuting.
I rode what you dug last summer

  • You can't go far wrong with a Shimano Deore. Unless you intend fitting to current BB - in which case you've missed some vital info.

Any MTB crankset (so 42 or 44T largest ring) is fine for commuting on road, you'll easily hit in excess of 30mph.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I fitted a Shimano Deore M590 chainset to my last bike, worked great, especially for the price.

For rebuilding a winter hack I'd look at acera.
    Too-ra-loo-ra, too-ra-loo-rye, aye

    Giant Trance
    Radon ZR 27.5 Race
    Btwin Alur700
    Merida CX500

I'd get the touring Deore - 26/36/48 rings. 42t may be 'fine', but a 22 is wasted - may as well not always be in your top gears.

As we don't know where he'll ride or how fit, saying a 22 is wasted is a little bit presumptuous, we can't all be cycling gods like you......

Its quite a hilly 3 miles 50% climb ish. And my fitness is erm lacking. But my "main" bike is a 26" dj with 36-13 ss set up. Realistically ill be going road cassette and probly 42-32 rings up front

12/13 to 21/24ish cassette should be fine.

IMHO, go for 8 over 9, the chains tend to last a bit longer and are cheaper.

Meant for road commuting specifically, I'd suggest most people are unlikely to be doing a road commute which requires a bottom gear of that ilk, and a few weeks commuting will mean that it doesn't for long! Depends on the proportion of road commuting to 'other' use I guess?

No specific advantage to going for a road cassette, particularly as the vast majority of 8 and 9 speed ones are 12-up. I'd get an 11-32 or something.

This will be 90% commuting my other bike is just to "rigid" in its operation if you get me

So basically standard mtb ratios should be fine. Ill also be using dmr moto rt tyres in a 26x2.2/3

I was working on the basis the first post only said it would be used for commuting, not that it wouldn't be used for anything else! Now clarified of course - and yes my commuter runs a 46T single up front and if it's only used on road I'd say a single ring would be best, selected for the expected use!

On those tyres a 44/42 will be fine.

For a winter hack bike I'd be looking on eBay or Pinkbike for something used.

For a cheap winter hack I'd go for this:

But depends on your current bottom bracket - are you running a square taper BB at the moment?

  • I don't understand why it takes up to now to get all the needed info to try and help you out.

Larger sized Deore is what I'd still suggest now.
