I have a Kinesis TK2 that's about 3 years old and noticed quite a lot of paint flaking on the underside of the down tube and under the BB. I decided to clean it up to paint it and when doing so noticed some defects in the aluminium tubing. Do the photos show anything worth worrying about?

Stone chips which have penetrated the paint, setting up little spots of corrosion. Should be OK if you treat them with suitable primer then paint and clearcoat. Don't go sanding too much off the downtube though; it's a big tube but extremely thin!

Edit: must inspect own Tk tonight. Now 6 years old and ridden year round

Thanks, hopefully I haven't sanded off too much!

I couldn't see any paint chips, I thought it might be impurities in the aluminium. You probably can't tell from the photo, but the 'recess' in the top photo is quite deep - maybe about .5mm

I was planning to use Hammerite smooth - will that be ok?

    Thanks, I hadn't spotted that.
