Ball Bearing or Sealed?

I''m doing the quarterly tinker on the bikes and have noticed some play in one of the headsets that uses a Pig Race bearing set up. I can get the balls cheap enough but ideally I'd like a new pig cage. Is it worth pursuing loose bearings or are these old hat and best replaced with a sealed headset? Do they last longer?

very very few headsets dont have seals.
i would just replace the balls if the races are ok.
I guess you are really meaning cartridge bearings."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yup I meant cartridge .
What bit is the race? Is that the cage the balls go in?0 -
The race is what the balls run on.I don't do smileys.
