HRM chest strap needed for Bryton (Rider 50)

Gents, do I need to stump up £45 for a Bryton chest strap or will cheaper alternatives work? It's an awful lot of money to pay for an accessory like this.
(one of the fasteners broke on the OEM one rendering it unusable and it no longer picks up a signal, it's about 3 years old so disappointment aside it's not a warranty issue).
