Coast to Coast or others

Hi guys, can anyone tell me about the coast to Coast mtb route. I know there is a race but I'm looking to do it in an uncompetitive way.
How many days does it take? What kind of tent did use take? And what other kit did you take as I would be looking to use 2 bags max as my brother will also be doing it. Not a far of things hanging off my bike.
We were thinking of using a basha style tent (waterproof tarpaulin used by military) as the pack up small. Only problem is getting a small enough sleeping bag. We would prob be doing it in the summer so weather is not as big a factor as the winter.
Just looking for some ideas really.
